Obituary for Fern R. Shirk (Hetrick)
Fern R. Shirk, 89, of East Earl, died Saturday, September 22, 2018 in Mt. Joy after a brief illness.
Born in Palmyra, PA she was a daughter of the late Earl and Emma (Rhoads) Hetrick. Her first husband, George Houck, died in 1982, and her second husband, Chester Shirk, died in 2004.
Fern was a homemaker most of her life but worked for a time as a nurse for Dr. Foust in New Holland, before beginning her family.
She was a member of St. Stephen Reformed Church and enjoyed flower gardening, feeding birds, and helping other people when she could.
Surviving is a daughter, Cynthia, married to James Frank of Lancaster; two grandchildren, Jason Frank of Adamstown, and Dr. Keri, married to Dr. Neil McGuigan of Leuchars Fife, Scotland; four great grandchildren, Caleb and Evan Frank, and Drostan and Lachlan McGuigan; and a sister Doris, married to Floyd Martin of East Earl.
Preceding her in death are four brothers, Kenneth, Sterling, Eugene, and Melvin Hetrick.
Services now will be private at the convenience of the family. However, a memorial celebration will be announced at a later date.
