Obituary for M. Richard "Doc" Martin

M. Richard “Doc” Martin, 91, of Narvon, formerly of New Holland, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Zerbe Sisters Nursing Center.
Born in New Holland, he was a son of the late Mahlon W. and Elsie V. (Harnish) Martin. His wife of 70 years, Beulah Grace (Petersheim) Martin, died Dec. 17, 2017.
Doc worked for 25 years as a woodworker for H.M. Stauffer & Sons in Leola. Later he worked for Meridian Products in New Holland, Goods Furniture in New Holland, and most recently for J.B. Zimmerman’s in New Holland, retiring in 1988. He also worked for 25 years as an ambulance driver for Leola Ambulance. During WWII he served his country in the US Army.
He was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church where he served as statistical secretary and Jr. Dept. Sunday School teacher for many years.
He enjoyed jigsaw and word puzzles along with playing his harmonica.
Surviving are 9 children, Larry (Cecilia) Martin, Merle (Ann) Martin, Linda Myers, Audrey (Brian) McCarty, Peggy (Butch) Gelnett, Barbara Mentzer, Annette (Rick) Davis, Lori (Carl) Zimmerman, and Sally (Andy) Martin; 21 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren; and a sister, Arlene (Marty) Brubaker.
Preceding him in death is a daughter, Marcia Bollinger, sons-in-law, Fred Bollinger, Dave Potts, and Ken Myers; a granddaughter, Tina Gelnett; 2 great-grandchildren, Grace Acosta, and Ian McCarty; 4 brothers, Jacob, LeRoy, Samuel, and Robert; and 4 sisters, Eva, Viola, Dorothy, and Ruth.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 19 at 11 am at the Evangelical United Methodist Church, 276 W. Main St., New Holland, with viewing from 10-11 am. Interment will be in Memory Gardens, Ephrata. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Mr. Martin’s memory may be made to a fund supporting his two great grandsons who were born prematurely at GoFundMe.com/LiamandLogan or to the Zerbe Retirement Community.
