Lois E. Brubaker, formerly of Smoketown, died on January 18 at Landis Homes Retirement Community. She was born on October 19, 1922 near Pigeon MI, a daughter of the late Jesse D. and Agnes (Gunden) Byler. She was married to J. Lester Brubaker, then of Lancaster, on June 30, 1946. They became the happy parents of four children, Rose Louise (Christian) Kennel, Charles R. (Joyce Longacre) Brubaker, Anne Marie (Jay) Roth, and Edward D. (Lucy Yoder) Brubaker; six grandchildren, Eric (Beth Hackman) Kennel, Christian David Kennel Jr., Carmen Kennel (Josiah) Garber, Kimberly Roth (Peter) Lehman, Wilson (Brianna Shenk) Roth, and Brandi Brubaker and four great-grandchildren, David Garber, Ruby Garber, Paxton Kennel, and Adaline Kennel. All of these survive except Charles and Joyce who died in 1986 and Christian David Kennel Jr., in 1983. In addition, surrogate children and grandchildren include Dennis (Doris) Hertzog, Karen (Jack) Quinn, Dennis (Liz) Hertzog Jr., Christopher Hertzog and Anna (Keith) Lasher. Lois had one brother and seven sisters, all of whom survive except her brother and oldest sister.
Lois expressed her faith in Jesus as an active participant in Mennonite congregations in the various communities in which she lived. She was widely known for her Christian hospitality and good cooking. She made many friends through hosting tourists for 20 years. Lois taught preschool children in Sunday school until she was 70 years old. For many years, she served on the outreach committee of the congregation and later coordinated the work of a small weekly prayer group.
Her deepest joy in life came from doing kind deeds for others. Giving flowers and vegetables from her large garden brought her pleasure. Doing things with and for children was a delight. Above all else, she loved the Lord and found joy in serving him. She gave strong support and encouragement to her husband in his 50-year career in Christian education.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, at West Bethany Chapel of Landis Homes. A memorial service will follow at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Memorial gifts may be sent to Lois’ favorite charity, Global Disciples, 315 W. James Street, Suite 202, Lancaster, PA 17603. The Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be posted at www.groffeckenroth.com.
