Bernadette C. "Bernie"  Johnson (Mickey)
Bernadette C. “Bernie” Johnson, 67, of New Holland, PA, lost a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, April 12, 2015, at Hospice & Community Care, Mount Joy. She is survived by her husband Dr. Robert P. Johnson with whom she shared 27 years of marriage.
Born in Sewickley, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Ruth (Evanish) Mickey.
After graduating from Penn State with a B.A. in English she attained her teaching certificate from Millersville University, and moved to the New Holland area. Bernie had been a High School English teacher at Lancaster Catholic High School and also substituted in the Eastern Lancaster County School District and the Pequea Valley School District.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, New Holland.
Bernie was active in the Lancaster County Democratic Party, having run for office in the 99th District, and also was active in the Guy K. Bard Democratic Club, Ephrata. She was an active member of New Holland Lions Club, and had been a mentor and tutor for many years.
Bernie enjoyed reading, gardening, and traveling. She was a supporter of the arts, enjoyed spending time with her family, and everyone that knew her would say she had a heart of gold.
Surviving in addition to her husband are her children, Michael Alan Hoober, married to Lesley Huff, Lancaster; Nancy J., married to Daniel Walder, Newark, DE; Robert C., married to Amy (Hurter) Johnson, Lafayette, CO; Kathleen M. Johnson, married to Steve Vierling, Denver, CO; Emily E. Hoober, married to Erik Steinbach, State College, and Eugene G. Johnson, Washington, D.C.; and seven grandchildren, Cassidy, Charlotte, Thomas, Nola, Violet, Lilliana, and Parker. Also surviving are her sisters, Gloria Kennedy married to Merle Brown, Kodiak, AK, and Rebecca, married to Kevin McGrath, Wexford, and her brother Eugene, married to Sue Mickey, Eliot, ME.
Bernie will be deeply missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to have had her in their lives.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, Apr. 16, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church, 150 Water Street, New Holland, PA 17557. A viewing will be held at Groff-High Funeral Home, 145 W. Main St., New Holland, from 9 a.m. until departure for Mass at the church. Private interment will be in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Wexford, PA. Kindly omit flowers.
